I have inherited a server which is configured as follows:

- W2K, Domain Controller, name of server is www.abcweb.org, and it is a
private network

www.abcweb.org is a public website. So, when a user is on the private
network and tries to access www.abcweb.org, it resolves to the server instead
of the public website.

Is there a way to rename the Domain Controller without wiping and
reinstalling the operating system?

When I try to add a computer to the domain, the domain cannot be located.
Is this a related issue?

Than ks.

Easy fix. You can either:

1. Create an A record called www, and provide the actual IP for that
webserver.
2. Delegate a zone called www, and provide the public nameservers on record
for that zone.

Either way, I wouldn't worry about trying to connect without the www, or
that takes additional steps and registry alterations that may affect GPO
functionality, among other stuff, with AD. Just have your users stick to the
www method.
