It's pretty much common knowledge that the 7600GT and X850XT trade blows with each other depending on the game.

7600GT=X850XT>X800XL

Yep, anoobis is right.

As for features, the X800 XL is DirectX 9, and the 7600 GT is DirectX 9c.

In practical terms, this means the 7600 GT can display OpenEXR HDR.

ALl things considered, the 7600 GT is the better choice.

Yeah although performance-wise I think the X850XT is a little above the 7600GT (and features-wise a little below), I'd have to agree anoobis. Firingsquad got higher framerates in Oblivion with FSAA & bloom with the X800XL compared to the 7600GT, but I'd think there are very few other situations where the XL would outperform the the 7600GT. Now the 7600GS is another story. Anyway, features and performance would put the 7600GT on top.

7600GT>X800XL>7600GS.

What are the prices? X850XT has been under $100 AR, about as low the cheapest XL's.

AH, you beat me agreeing with anoobis. :)

I took too long searching digit-lifes charts for a comparison. Seems they took the XL out of the newest few charts, so no direct comparison (just 7600GT vs x850xt vs x800gto) Going back to Dec 2005, all the X8xx's are in there.

After all of the fuss that was made over these two cards I decided to have 7600GT=X850XT tattoo'd on my a$$ to serve as a reminder. Unfortunately when I look at it in the mirror I see TX058X=TG0067 followed by what could a period but is probably a wart.

Heheh @ tatoo remark.

On a side note, my review of the 7600 GT vs. X850 XT vs. X1800 GTO should go live on Tom's this week. :)

the x800xl is a good card but i would say if you are looking
to buy a card go for the 76gt.

personal experience with both on 3d marks 05 and 06
x800xl 3dmark 05 4800stock and 5300 oced
76gt stock 6100 and havent tried to oc because it is
a evga 7600gt oc already 580 and 1500.

3dmark06 the76gt scored 3200
the x800xl 2000
mostly because of sm3.0

they look and play the same on games though

I was kinda hoping someone would have some shocking revelation for me, but it seems like my gut was about right in the first place on the cards. I was always planning on the 7600GT, but then I saw the 800XL for cheap and I dont mind downgrading a little to save a few bucks. I can get the 800XL for about $140, while the 7600GT's are probably in the $180-200 range depending on the brand and deal (all prices in CAD), which to me makes me think they are probably a toss up as far as price/performance goes. Im tempted to maybe just get the 800XL and then maybe invest in the next gen's 7600GT equiv down the road...

The thing of it is, is that I cannot seem to find the great deals for refurbs and closeout X800s on ATI's website anymore.
