i would at least use a dual core processor like the x2 3800+ or core 2 duo e 6300/6400 for a server though it would help a lot delivering stuf to different comps. o and at least a gigabyte or 2 of ram

Sure, I had a 486 server well into my k6-2 days. But this thing has PCI-X and PCIe x16, PCIe x1 and PCI. So, if you have reason to use all those server specific things, you can upgrade to this thing from your P3/P4 or Athlon MP or whatever, and still carry over your components.

As I said, I don't disagree. But for a select few, even the 3800x2 is overkill. Anywho, It's an interesting board, is it not?

get an $85 mobo and an $180 cpu and you got a really really good server.

My fedora based "home server" runs firewall, router, file-server, ftp server, Oracle 10g server (!!!) and hosts terminal X11 apps (for simple Pentium 133Mhz based X11 terminal for www browsing), all of that runs on Celeron Tualatin 1.2Ghz + 256MB RAM + 200GB hard drives, on via-based integrated VGA MB.

I have it in the attic, it has passed 3 summer season at 50 C, without problem until this summer, when power supply failed. I get replacement from salvaged parts, now runs well again...

In fact, you really do not need too much power for server, unless you are serving 100 clients or something like that. Low performance legacy parts are best IMHO.

totally agree with you.
i have a celeron 1.7 512MB RAM and a bunch of hd's at work. it works pretty well as a file/backup server. I really dont see the need for dual core, 2GB or ram and other stuff. It all depends on what you're gonna use it.

It's just that my impression of a server (due to the ones I've been building) had always a 'server stance' i.e. hard-Gigabit ehternet, hard-RAID card, multi core, SCSI 10K/15K, 2GB+ RAM... etc.

well, it's not the hardware that makes a server. It helps a lot, but that's not the primary stuff (depending on the situation)

Why would you want PCI X if you have sata? It,s just wasting money on a expensive board.
