Featuring Socket-F Opteron processors, which were formally announced yesterday, the first AMD-based server lineup from Dell will be launched in the fourth quarter of 2006, the Chinese-language Apple Daily cited market sources as reporting.

Only 4% of market share remaining to obtain 30% of overall server market share. :)

Takes alot to gain 4%.. either way. It's good to see AMD succeeding in this market... it's just sad knowing that Intel's new Woodcrest will undo 3years of hard work..:(

it seems like you are overestimating what it takes to get soemone to rip out one brand of server for another. That's why it took AMD so long to get numbers in the server market.

Some companies want to test a new machine for 6 months before committing to it. AMD is in no trouble - directly - from Woodcrest. Its most direct competitor is Bensley or Tulsa.

Now IT mgrs have even more Intel server architectures to choose from which will make them leery of using any of them. AMD will continue to gain share. If Dell really goes for it (as has been said) and drops X2 into desktops, that will be more share.

I actually figured that they would just jump to Socket F. That's probably why AMD delayed; so they could get more chips to Dell. Most people would be surprised how many requests for AMD dell gets.
