DNS help

I failed to mention that I know that we can;t change the widnows domain name
in win2K. I know that this can only be done in win2K3 in native mode.

Where is hq.xf.com? I don't understand why this necessitates trying to
change your internal AD or DNS....

Good luck....You can't change the AD domain name in Windows 2000 without a
total reinstall. Is this really necessary? It's just cosmetic
anyway....perhaps I'm misunderstanding what it is you're trying to
accomplish & someone else will chime in.

The change is not really cosmetic.

They want this for cookies for the dev group. (the entire org is
development)

oh and I should ahve stated that I know that we can;'t change the domain
name till we move to win2K3 native mode.

As for web development, it really doesn't matter what your external domain
name is, which in your case is HQ.XB.com. AD is a separate logical entity.
Believe me, I host over 25 domains and none of them are based on my AD name,
and can develop or test any one of them at anytime. You don't have to change
your AD name to accomodate any external names, matter of fact, we would
rather keep them diffrerent.

If you want to host the HQ.XB.com zone on your DNS, that is fine, but you
really don't need to add that as a search suffix on your machines, since you
will host that on your DNS anyway and your machines are only pointing to
your DNS for resolution (as it should be with AD). I assume you have a
private address range and the use of hosting HQ.XB.com will be only for the
private IP of the webservers.

Just keep in mind, you just setup IIS with a website for dev for each
domain, but ensure you set the hostheaders to identify each site.

Also, keep in mind, the domain HQ.XB.com will be hosted on a DNS server at
your external ISP's DNS, since that will host the public IP (you can't mix
private and public on the same zone with your internal DNS).
