hey guys, I am trying to decide wich AMD X2 socket AM2 processor to buy. Im planning on overclocking it with the AS-3000 liquid cooling from Kingwin.
I was thinking about the X2 4800+ but its nowhere to be found...
The main dilema is between a 1MB and a 2MB L2 cache, is it really worth it??

Could I overclock a X2 3800+ to 2.6? to reach the X2 5000+ speed??
Or a X2 +4000 to 2.8? How about a X2 +4600 to 2.8 to match the FX-62 speed??
thanks for all your thoughts.

AMD may be discontinuing the 1MBX2 CPU's this year, they aren’t worth the cost/price ratio. So if you’re thinking getting one, this would be the year.

So far testing has shown a 5% speed increase by 1MBX2 in games over 521X2.
But I expect that to percent to increase as games are optimized for Dual Core.

In general, AMD 64's top out at 2.7/8 on air and 3.0/1 on liquid cooling.
But that’s assuming you get lucky and get a really good one.

512X2's at any speed tend to OC better then 1MBX2 cores, probably due to lower power consumption/heat generation of having only 512k in each core.

As a general rule of thumb, get the best you can afford. OCing doesn’t always work as well as some would have you believe.

yeah, I saw that 5% increase in some AMD chart wich directly compared the 3800+ with the 4000+. And the only affordable 1MB core right now is the 4000+ since the 4800+ is run out everywhere and the 4400+ is around $500.
Would all the 512X2's overclock the same? at about 3.0 with liquid cooling??
Should I get the best one I can afforc in case its not a very overclockable core??

Actually, NewEgg.com is selling old and new X2+4400's under $250.00 US.
1) Get the best you can afford.
2) There’s on guaranty where OCing is concerned, refer to 1.
3) CPU's are tested to operate at a rated speed, theoretically they are all the same but obviously one batch of CPU's can end up slightly inferior or superior then another, so... refer to 1.
4) OCing/OVing/OHing too much can shorten the life of your CPU, so... refer to 1

That’s because 2X1MB CPU's are going to be discontinued this year.
And remember, I said go for the best you can afford, if that’s an X2+4200, then go for it.
But don’t hold your breath on reaching X2+5000 speeds, at least not with 12hrs P95 stability. If the core you’re buying was that good, most likely AMD would be selling it as an X2+5000.
