I was wondering which one of the following videocards would be better for gaming. I know neither of them will be much use playing games less than 2 years old, but I'd still like your opinion.

Radeon 9250 128MB DDR, AGP 8x
Onboard GeForce6100 with 128MB shared DDR2 RAM (nForce4 chipset)

As a side note, the GeForce6100 is not entirely incapable of running games... I have personally seen one (with an Athlon64 3000 and 128MB shared DDR1 RAM) run CoD2 on low detail at about 10fps. I know, that's horrible, but hey, it ran.

The 9250 will definitely do better. It has a dedicated interface, dedicated ram, and a dedicated gpu that is actuallly still passable. This would allow more ram to be used for the system and less processor overhead for the video processing.

That said, don't buy them if you don't already have them. There are many more options that are orders of magnitude better for not a super significant amount greater than the selling price of them right now. If you already have them, do the 9250 and don't look back. I have seen it run CoD2, and it may haven't been very playable, but it ran (and with many more than 10 fps). Overall, the Radeon is a better processor than the 6100 integrated video chipset.

lol no im not gonna buy the radeon 9250... its just that it was in my old pc (athlonxp 2000, 512MB DDR1 RAM) and i was wondering if my new pc (athlon64 x2 3800, 1GB DDR2 RAM of which i will dedicate 128MB to the 6100) would outperform it in terms of gaming... atleast until i save up and actually get a decent pcie card.

Looks pretty good. Only one problem: No agp support. That 9250 isn't going to do you any good if you can't plug it in...

This would be a better alternative. Here it is at newegg. Unfortunately, you will need an add on card to use AM2 and DDR2. However, it has AGP and PCI-E so you won't have to worry about using the stinky onboard video of the ECS board. I personally use the ASRock, and it is rock solid. I love it and it hasn't let me down yet, and I have had it for about 8 months. The reviews for the CPU board aren't too bad either, showing that there is no performance hit from using the board as opposed to using a native socket. Just my opinion, and Newegg is the best. I haven't been to a Fry's (not anywhere within a 1000 miles from me), but I have heard good things. It's your choice.

no... ill stick with the fry's deal, cuz i plan on getting a pcie card soon anyway, and the ECS mobo seems pretty good with DDR2, AM2, SATA2, PCI-E support, not to mention i have an awesome experience with ECS mobos... couldn't break em if you tried.

Sounds like a plan. Just make sure not to be too dissapointed in your gaming until you get the pci-e card. And when you do, make sure you disable the onboard vga, it causes the video not to be displayed on the pci-e card sometimes. Not to mention, you'll get the other ram back...

I bought an nvidia 6200 pcie turbo cache at Fry's for about 50 bucks. It's what I used before I could get my good card, and it's what I'm using now after blowing up my good video card.

lol dont worry i wont die from a sucky video card

i think i'll upgrade early next year... maybe the next gen cards will be out and i might be able to snatch an X1800 variant for $150...

in the meantime... i'll play CounterStrike (not Source, obviously) and MOHAA... as well as Age of Empires 2 (one of my favorite all time games).
