Which diagnostic apps to run after my first build, E6600

Hi Guys,

I'm in the process of finishing my first build ever (YAY!), and wanted to ask what applications I should run to see if the hardware I bought is running at full capacity. I'm not sure what programs are out there and how they work, but could you guys help with the list and I will take care of the rest. I just want to make sure that I am getting everything I can out the my hardware, and that I havent missed something or installed something incorrectly giving me less performance. I suppose every component has some kind of diagnostic tool right?

The list of apps:
1) CPU = (heat sensor SW, speed, etc)

2) Video = 3DMark

3) Memory =

4) Hard drive = (random access time, transfer rates etc)

5) All other important ones.

Thanks again! I couldn't have done this without your help.

How will I interpret the results of the 3DMark and PCMark tests using overall scores? Is there something I can benchmark it against? (ie. I read something earlier about a guy who setup his new E6600 and got a score of 11000+ on 3DMark and said he nearly pooped his pants. How will I even know if this is good or not? How will I know when it is ok to poop)

I just thought about something - if you run a 3DMark or PCMark test, if you get a score, you have to compare that score to someone else who has the EXACT same components right??? I mean a E6600 with a P5W DH and a E6600 with a P5B will yield different results right, even though its the same E6600.

I guess I need to build a list of people with the EXACT same components, and find out what scores we get on average to see if my system is running at capacity.

What do you think? Is this logical?

4) Hard drive = (random access time, transfer rates etc) <- scan for badblocks too

When you reformatted your hard-drive, as long as you did a full reformat (as opposed to 'Quick'), it scanned your hard-drive for bad sectors and all that already.

I inherited a PC a while back which I was going to fix up, but decided not to and just got with a new rig as it was going to cost too much to fix it up.

ANYWAY, I just ran PCMark on it as you said, and it came out at 1682. What does this mean? I guess that's not pretty good.

What kinds of games can I play with this machine?

Remember it's not just for me. People use these pages to search across. The more info we share, the better it is for everyone. Otherwise I could just PM my buddies - but thats not really in the spirit of THG.

Thanks for the help! Much appreciated.
