Should be no roblems as long as the software didn't come out in 95 or 98.even then, some win98 software still works on 2000pro and winxp, all three versions(home, professional, media centre edition).anyways you should be fine with that software.have fun.

yes if you are using a 32bit operating system, no if you are using a 64bit operating system. your program are developed for 32bit os, the processor will run progams if the are 32 or 64 bit, it doesnt matter with the processor.

Thanks Ok Sounds good. i think all my sotware is less than 4 yr s old so
now i'll look at 64 bit hardware. Newegg has amd64 3700 on sale.
I don't overclock and no games, whats a good mid priced board?

Thanks again Bob

If the software is DOS based then you will run into trouble like you usually would with windows XP. IF you plan to use XP Pro 64 edition then you will run into problems with older 16bit aplications.

However, this is a limitation of the OS, not the processor. The Athlon 64 is backward compatible to X86 code. It will run 16 bit programs just fine under PC DOS if it is loaded from a floppy and doesn't need HDD access..

Executing DOS programs from Windows compatibility mode is another matter since unless you specify otherwise, the WIn 2000/XP installation will create the new 32 bit file format on the HDD.

I know you don't overclock, but...

Get the San Diego 3700+, buy a good CPU cooler, and get it to 2.7ghz (FX-55).

Personal experience, it owns and its easy. Need good RAM though...

Don't use Win XP Pro x64 edition, there's TONS of programs that won't work. I have a AMD Athlon 64 3200+ running XP x64 and there's lots of programs that wouldn't install. I'm soon switching to Normal XP Pro, there isn't that much of a gain with XP x64. However, FC4 64 bit edition ran great...

Try relaxing your memory timings a little? E.g 2.5-4-4-8

You also might try tinkering with the setting to alter your memory ratio or frequency independently.

For instance, even with my OCZ platinum memory I had problems. I had to change my memory frequency from 200mhz to 166mhz to handle the increased FSB.

You also might need to increase the voltage on both RAM and CPU. My CPU is increased from 1.4 to 1.425v (the lowest I can have it stable) and my RAM is at 2.7v (however OCZ RAM is warranted upto 2.8v, so I can't promise yours will handle it).

I'd recommend:

Lower the timings on the RAM and the RAM frequency or divider (try 5:6 for instance... my board doesnt have a 'divider' you just set the frequency independently).

Increase the voltage slightly on RAM and CPU

*Then* try increasing your FSB

BUT be careful. Especially voltage increases - entirely at your own risk!
