X1600 PRO 512M or X1600XT 256M? A ram vs speed question...

Hello people,

I am looking at either the following 2 graphics cards:

Sapphire Radeon X1600XT 256M GDDR3

Core Clock Speed 600 MHz
Memory Clock Speed 1.4 GHz

X1600 PRO 512M DDR2

Core Clock Speed 500 MHz
Memory Clock Speed 800 MHz

The X1600XT is obviously faster with GDDR3 ram. However, the X1600 Pro has 512 DDR2 ram. My question is, shall I go with the faster one, or the one with more ram? I can't find benchmarks for X1600 Pro 512, thus I need some advice. It's basically speed verses ram...GDDR3 verses DDR2...

Thanks in advance.

The X1600XT is better than the X1600PRO because VRAM has almost no effect on performance. A 128MB X1600XT would totally pwn a 1GB X1600PRO.

However, you should instead look at the nVidia 7600GT; newegg has a PNY 7600GT for $129 after rebate. The 7600GT is better than the whole X1600 series, and it's about the same price.

Splendid
Go for speed first, VRAM second. Very few games take advantage of 512 mg cards. If you can squeeze out a few more dollars, a X1800XT would probably be better yet. Newegg has one for $179.99 (Sapphire Radeon X1800XT 10054).

Thank You all for your feedback.

As I'm based in the UK, I think I will go with the X1600XT as the 7600GT is a little more expensive.

I was playing Half Life 2 today on my x1300 with max settings so the X1600XT should be great. I'm not a mad PC gamer as I tend to spend most of my time on Halo 2 (Live), thus only require a budget card.

P.S my X1300 is faulty, thus the reason for getting a new (better) card :D

I honestly would advise spending the extra £15 on a 7600gt, you gain around 25% performance!

Here's a great value one that has been factory overclocked:

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/110044/product_info/rb/21150358794

It's only £117! Which in my view is a BARGAIN!

If you still want to get the x1600xt ebuyer has one for £86:

Everytime i have purchased something from ebuyer the service has been second to none.

I would look at an x850xt. Newegg as some for as low as $119.99.

newegg x850xt

x850xt xfire

xfire card is only 164.99

850 xfire isnt perfect, but @$284.98 its going to crush any single card at that price point

Best of the last gen, still crushes x1600 and only a highly oced 7600 could touch it.

You should pay more attention, he is based in the UK. Therefore he cannot buy from websites based in the States.

He also doesn't want to spend that kinda money, if he did he could just buy a 7900gt or something similar.

Ok guys and gals, I have finally decided to go with the Leadtek WinFast GeForce 7600 GT.

It can easily be overclocked to the Extreme version as I have read in many articles. It also has the new cooling solution that is exclusive to Leadtek and is more quieter than the reference boards.

Here's the link:

I'm off to kick n00b ass in Halo 2.

Later All!

Hope you're very pleased with that card!

I never saw that....looks like a VERY good deal!
