I took a cpu out of a dell board"Dimension 4400" it said on the socket of the board it was a socket 478B. I placed this cpu in a Biostar P4M80-M4 mobo which is a socket 478 and I can't get it to post. Is there a difference between the socket 478 and the 478B that will not allow it to work. Bruce

I had already found that link and guess the cpu out of the dell which is a 1.7 ghz /256/400/1.75v just won't work on thsi board even though it should. Bruce

I think you need more specific info.

For example, I have a 478 socket MB. I can run Northwood cores which are 478 pin. I cannot run Prescotts, which some are 478 pin.

MB chipsets are the main reasons why certain chips will or will not run.

So you need to be more specific on the CPU, then just 478b. I'm guessing you have a 533 FSB CPU. Your motherboard may not support that bus speed.

The mother board is new " which does not mean allot" But will run 400/533/800 mhz. This cpu came out of a problem dell that would only boot for 15 minutes before freezing and then had to be shut down for a while. I'm guessing the cpu is the problem being the board is new. I just ordered a new socket 478 retail p4 from new egg. Hopefully that will do the trick. I'm trying to get a system going for a friend that does not have much money and I'm using what good parts he had. I had to start with a new board, memory and case. thanks Bruce

Okay.. I didn't see your MB name on the 1st post

Looks like that board will support:

Intel P4 Prescott - 3.2GHz (800MHz)
Intel P4 Prescott - 2.8GHz (533MHz)
Intel P4 - 3.4GHz (800MHz)
Intel P4 - 3.06GHz (533MHz)
Intel P4 Celeron - D - 3.06GHz (533MHz)
Intel P4 Celeron - 2.8GHz (400MHz)

Biostar Group - CPU support

I had already found that link and guess the cpu out of the dell which is a 1.7 ghz /256/400/1.75v just won't work on thsi board even though it should. Bruce

So I guess you pretty much did find out that CPU won't work.

That CPU is a Socket 478 Williamette P4. The 1.75V Vcore (180nm) and 256K L2 tipped me off to that. Most 478 boards that can support FSBs of 800 MHz will not support this chip and some 400/533 Northwood boards won't either due to the core voltage being 0.20V greater than what the Nortwoods take.

If you want to ensure support of the CPU, look for one that supports Williamette P4s.

Thanks, This board does not support the willamate cpu and your probably right that is the reason it won't post. I just ordered a intel/cd 315 2.26 478 256k Retail and it is prescott. I am hoping to keep the cost down for my friend a keep him computing until he can upgrade later. Thanks for the help I should get this cpu by Tuesday from NewEgg and maybe have his PC working in no time. Bruce

I did a google on the CPU and took this notation off the top of the cpu" SL5TK and your right it is a willamette and that board does not support that cpu. Thanks for helping me with this problem. Bruce
