Newbie here! Recently, I attempted to install the new 6.8 Catalyst drivers from ATI. I did a clean uninstall of the old drivers and software and began to install the new drivers. Unfortunately, the installation process hangs at the WDM driver install? I checked taskmanager, and it displays; WDM not responding. After several attempts, I still cannot get these WDM drivers to install! I have WinXP Media Center Edition 2005 service pack 2. I have the .net framework 1.1, and 2.0 along with Direct X 9 installed. Nothing seems to work. If anyone out there has had this problem and resolved it, your help would be greatly appreciated!
First thing first, you have to clean out the old drivers first. Adding WDM ontop of old can create problems. Totally remove all traces of old drivers, and don't let windows install the default drivers upon reboot (just unplugg you internet to be sure). Then install the complete Driver+WDM package together, that should fix it.
If you still have trouble, then clean out the old drivers again, and then try installing the WDM package first, then the Display Drivers only (not the all-in-one pack), then the other components like CCC.
WDM should not be installed after, and sometimes installing it before the display driver will fix problems, but it's more tedious and complicated.
Also be sure your card is supported. I presume with a pre-built shipping with the OS that would be the case, but with a homer-built I'd never assume that to be the case, I've seen people install it on old Radeon VEs thinking they'd get full functionality out of WinMCE. Actually I'd love if it worked fully with my old AIW PCI that'd be great for an SDTV HTPC.
Thanks for the support. I am going to attempt to install again after I have removed all ATI drivers and software. I'll let you know how it goes. Sorry about the all caps thing!
Hello TheGreatGrapeApe! Just thought you should know, I followed your instructions and I am now up and running! It was a little buggy though. The installation package would verify that the WDM drivers installed successfully, but Windows Installer would hang? I closed out the program from hanging using taskmanager and rebooted. I now have a working Catalyst Control Center, and the TV (Theater 550 pro) functions work seamlessly through my Media Center! Thanks for the info!
