That depends on your in game settings. Take a look at the chart on the first page of this article. It pretty much states if you intend to use AA/AF at your monitor's recommended resolution, then yes, SLI is recommended.
I would not reccomend SLI for ANYONE unless they are playing on a 30" lcd or larger. Even then it is a waste. SLI is a BAND AID solution (Remember 3dfx anyone?) that WILL NOT LAST. At the very most, you will see dual GPU SINGLE CARD solutions like the 7950.
Just know that if you buy 2 graphics cards, even if they are top of the line, they WILL be outclassed by a SINGLE card within 6 months.
If you really want to bump up the eye candy bet a 7950 or 1950. SLI/Crossfire is a joke and soon to go the way of the Dodo bird.

All points against SLI are vaild...I've had the same thoughts about it. That said, wouldn't it be nice to have the option of doing SLI if you have the chance to? It's an issue I've been struggling with for a while...SLI or non-SLI motherboard? I don't have the money now to buy two high end cards, let alone a single 7950GX2...but who knows what my situation will be like 6 months from now? Maybe I'll have the cash to splurge on my graphics solution. Or maybe they'll find some other way to exploit the interface, i.e. ATI's physics? I don't know...I just wouldn't want to regret not having an SLI board if I had the opportunity to exploit it came along (especially on my 21" LCD). It's definitely a topic worth serious discussion.

That's pretty much the situation I'm in. I picked nearly everything I want, but cannot decide on a motherboard. If at some point SLI becomes a must have for high end systems, I'd like the opportunity to make that upgrade with minimal purchases. But if the industry isn't going to be making full use of SLI, then I'm going to save some cash on a non-SLI board.

Yeah, because a single X1900XTX can run games like F.E.A.R. fine at 1920x1200 or 2560x1600 with antialiasing.
No one says you have to buy an SLI system. As to the question, at 1600x1200, I'd say just get a single X1900XT for now and add a second for Crossfire later if you so feel.
yes a 79gt should work fine for atleast another 6 months or a year
unless you want the newest stuff asap.
i have 68gts in sli and the biggest thing i have noticed is heat.
