i unplugged my ps/2 keyboard while the computer was still on and when i plugged it back in my pc shut off and wouldn't turn back on. my pc consists of:

athlon 64 3000+ cpu
abit nf8-v socket 754 mobo
radeon x850 pro agp gpu
1 x 1gb ddr 400 pc 3200 corsair ram
550W antec trupower psu
cooler master 5 case
audigy 2 zs sound card

i'm assuming that only my mobo got damaged. so my first option would be to replace it with another 754 socket mobo for around $50. the problem with this is that i can't find one available at my retail store that fits my 12x9.6 inch slot in my case. also, the 754 socket and agp slots have been discontinued, which could be why i am having trouble finding a lot of these mobos around.

i guess the only mobos that promise the most future upgradability would be the am2 or socket T. the problem with this option is first of all i don't need that much processing power yet. i was hoping to hold off on upgrading the cpu until dx10 and vista were out and stable. i only use my pc for moderate gaming and video editing. Secondly, an am2 or socket t upgrade would cost a fortune since i would have to practically do a complete system overhaul. if i upgrade the mobo i would have to upgrade my cpu, gpu, and memory as well. i have estimated that this would cost around $700 if i wanted to get the best value system that includes at least a 6300 core 2 duo/athlon 64 x2 dual core, 2gb of ddr2 ram, and a geforce 7600gt or higher.

First see if it is the MB or the PSU.

I used to use nothing but Antec when building 32 bit systems but had ONE that went bad and fried the MB and the TWO MB RMA's.

Now that I just build 64's (Optrons) and I only use PC P&C supplys....worth the extra money.

If the MB went out...get a DFI.

i went out and bought a dynex 400W psu. i tried it in my pc and it still won't start. is there any chance that anything besides the mobo got damaged?

There is always the chance other components might be fried when another dies. I have a similar problem. I thought my Antec 500w truepower2.0 had died because when I put in a backup supply I actually got some life where before I had nothing. Well after hooking up video I realized I have no post. So I diconnected everything and still nothing. reset bios nothing. So now its down to the cpu and mb, which the bad PSU apparently took out. Im just afriad to pop a possibly bad cpu into my working sli rig and have it damage it 8O
