I have a 4 server LAN, and currently have DNS installed on 2 servers.
However, I only have DNS activated on one of the two servers. When I re-boot
the DNS server, you can imagine what happens to the rest of the network. I
read that running DNS on multiple servers can cause problems. What should I
do to add redundancy to the network?

If your running win2k/2k3 server and AD.....

Have 2 DC's with DNS installed, make the DNS zones AD integrated and they'll
replicate any changes to DNS.

Point your clients NIC's to both your DC's for primary and secondary DNS.

Make sure your DC's NIC's only point to themselves for DNS also.

Can you advise me how to make the zones integrated? I apologise, I am
struggling with DNS.

Are your DNS servers also an Active Directory Domain?

If they are, check the Type of zone on the General Tab on the Zone
properties. If they arte not domain controllers AD integrated is not
available.

One note- if the zone on one DC is AD integrated, you cannot have a
secondary zone on another DC in the same domain, all zones must be AD
integratred. Do not change a zone from secondary to AD integrated, secondary
zones must be deleted. Only change one standard primary zone to AD
integrated

I have a small 4 server single domain. All servers are running Server 2003
standard with SP1. All servers are in native mode. So I should turn on DNS
on the secondary server I have it installed on, and run integrated zones
correct?

I believe you should run DNS on all domain controllers, Do not create and
secondary zones for your domain, delete any that exist.

There really is no such thing as a "Secondary" DNS _server_. DNS servers may
have primary zones, Secondary zones or even both secondary and primary
zones. The order they are used by clients are preferred and alternate.
