I m not sure whether this post is suppose to be here. If not, pls direct me
to another newsgroup

i've a xp machine, and the \sysmte32\drivers\etc\host file is filled with
some entries

ipaddress www.abc.com

When i attempt to run www.abc.com from IE, it cannot resolves giving dns
error. But using ip address, it is able to resolves.
When this host file is applied to other xp machines, IE can resolves dns

Delete ALL the entries except the two local loopback entries. Save the file.
Then go into it's properties and force it to Read ONly, and try it again.

Obviously you have some sort of either spyware or virus that took over your
HOSTS file. More than likely spyware.

Are these entries supposed to be in the hosts file?

IE does not resolve names, the DNS client service does that. Does the hosts
file entries show when you run ipconfig /displaydns?

It is easier to add these entries to a local DNS server, rather than using
HOSTS files that require a lot more resources maintain, as you are begining
to see. Also if the hosts file starts getting larger it takes a longer to
start the DNS client service.
Do you not have a local DNS server?
