I was telling a friend of mine I was getting a new monitor and eventually we got to talking about how it would be nice to get a widescreen monitor, but it would suck to game on it because the native resolution would be 1600x1200 and unless you want to buy a new video card every 6 months or so, you'd never be able to play the "latest and greatest" on it. So I got to thinking, are there any 1280x1024 native resolution widescreen LCD monitors out there??

Generally, 19" widescreen monitors will have a resolution of 1440 x 900 and 20" ones will be 1680 x 1050. 23" and above are likely to be 1920 x 1200.

A widescreen monitor usually has an aspect ratio of 16:9(4:2.25) or 16:10(4:2.5) while a regular monitor has an aspect ratio of 4:3. The resolution you are asking about would require an aspect ratio of 4:3.2 which would bring the monitor shape closer to a square than an elongated rectangle.

As far as gaming on a widscreen monitor goes you don't need to compare the dimensions in pixels, just the net amount of pixels in the monitor. So a monitor with the resolution you mentioned has about 1.3MP. If the card you have in mind can support that number of pixels, with all the eye-candy that you like to have on, then you can go for a 1440x900 resolution which has approximately 1.3MP in a widescreen setup. If not then you might need a better card and or a dual or quad card setup.
