Cases - Hunting for help on budget, well cooled cases

Even'n folks.

It's been several years since I've had to do any 'huge' upgrades, or even had the funds to think about it, but now thanks to a bit of windfall and the advent of the PCI Express stuff, I find myself setting out to build an entire system from scratch, rather than reusing anything from the old system. That and my roommate so desperately needs an upgrade, he gets my old piece. ;)

Anyhow. There's been one thing over everything else that qualifies as the bane of my computing existance, the basic core cause of troubles over the last dozen years more than anything else (Beyond, perhaps, stuff simply getting more powerful faster than I can afford to upgrade.. ^_^)...
And that's heating'n'cooling issues. And while I can hunt down decent seeming fans (Like Silverstone's rather potent looking ones), good cooling solutions for the graphics card, and the like.. One of the basic things that'll trip me up is a poorly designed case. Since usually I've had to operate on donated parts, that's not often a spot I have a choice on, but this time around...

So after spending three weeks picking over designs on various sites (mostly newegg, thanks to the plethora of helpful pictures on most every case), I'm still stumped on what'd be the best overall, and now I'm looking for outside help.

The criteria in this case would be ATX motherboard fitting, only needs to really hold two 3.5" drives and a 5.25", and cost $50 or less. The less is highly preferable.

I do -not- need pretty lights, pretty cases, pretty colors, or any of that rot. I do need something that promotes an amazingly good airflow to keep most everything well cooled. I don't have the luxury of AC in my home, and the days tend to get pretty toasty.. so fresh and less heated air has to go smoothly through the machine, or I end up with problems. And I'm sick of having to open the case, laying large window fans along it.

So far, things like

ENERMAX CS-5688AL-PW White Aluminum ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
and
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16811129145
Antec SUPER LANBOY Silver anodized aluminum ATX Mini Tower Computer Case
seem to fit the thought, but I'm leary on the airflow of the first, and the price of the second.

I'd like to -avoid- the need to take a dremel to a case, beyond perhaps the smoothing of edges.

Hopefully people can lend some ideas and advice on cases and better airflow. Thanks for the time!

The big 'problem' I'm having in shopping for the stuff, is that my understanding of airflow and things heat related is pretty weak. Most of the advise I've gotten locally is 'Same amount of intake as output fans, or slightly more output', and nothing in the way of 'ventilation holes' that aren't fan related, as well as figuring out the path you want cooling to take.

:hums: The pictures of that one don't really make it clear how well the front intake's airflow will be overall, but besides that, it does look like a good possibility.

I'm open to other ideas as well, if anyone else wants to chip in.. or second the Centurion motion. ;)

Also any explainations on how a top vent would help, rather than hinder an airflow path is heartily welcome.

the centurion may fit the bill.

It's selling for $34 after rebates right now. Coolermaster has a pretty good reputation in the case business and while this is one of their entry level ones it's a very good deal for the price.

You may not be interested in using a dremel but I find that a top vent hole goes a long way to keeping a computer cool.

u kno, i tested that.

i have an NZXT lexa, and i blocked the blow hole, temps didnt change. but then again, i didnt have good wiring.

:chuckles softly: Been there, done that, on the bad wiring part, back when I was all, "Longer cables are better! Lets have an 18" drive cable when 6" will do fine!" Something I'm definitely over.

Well, your options are somewhat limited if you don't want to spend more than 50 bucks. However, I'm sure if you hunt around, sniff out sales and rebates, you can find something good.

Just make sure it has at least a 120mm intake fan and a 120mm exhaust fan. This is the bare minimum you need for decent airflow. 120mm fans are preferable because they can push around a lot of CFMs at relatively low RPMs and are thus quieter and more efficient.

A good rule of thumb I've heard is set aside 10% of your budget for the case.

Well, considering that my overall budget for the whole system was to be $600, and I'm up to close to $800, including that case and a mess of things I won't budge on.. Welll.. :smiles an' shrugs: As for -quiet-, I don' need that. :gestures over to the old case, the 30" box fan and the dual-12" window fan, that are 'helping' keep the badly made monster cool: Generally, -anything- I get will be quieter than that rickity ol' pair. ;)

Now, the more -cooling- part, that's the thing I like a lot.
Just on the off chance someone wants to go, 'Nooo, you total fool, don't get -that-', might as well drop the proposed parts list.

Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 ST3160812A 160GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache IDE Ultra ATA100 Hard Drive - OEM

Still debating that hard drive, as it's not a necessity. Just a luxury of something bigger than my old set.

.... And yes, I know, I'm spending more on the board than the processor chip. Considering the next 'up' in price puts me in dual core, and at $50 more.. I'll manage. ;)

I'm just hoping the silverstones are really great fans.. I'd think about the vantec ones, as I believe they can move even more air, but.. these seem more designed to handle being turned down in speed. :)

Anyways.. thanks again to folks for pointing out the Centurion and -not- smacking me around with the search button (as manually digging around I'm finding more and more referances to it in other posts, but search didn't help much at all.) Thanks for not playing 'Crush the newbie!' ^_^
