Using a Dell Axim Pocket PC I am having problems connecting to a Compaq
Presario via USB. I have tried following the instructions for the routine
install of the Axim drivers, activesync, etc. The instructions say to
install the software from CD first before connecting the Axim via the cradle
to the USB port on the computer. When I do this and the software asks to
connect the Axim via USB, it will not recognize the Axim and I get stuck in
a loop and eventually have to cancel the install.
I have gone against the rules and connected the Axim to the computer without
first installing the software. The Compaq laptop recognizes the new USB
device and asks to install the drivers from CD, which I then proceed to do,
but the software again hangs when trying to detect the device. If I cancel
out at this point, the operating system takes over, recognizes the devices
and starts the synchronization process. All is fine and dandy, until I
remove the Axim from the cradle and then place it back in the cradle. When
I do this, the OS recognizes the disconnect, but will not recognize the
reconnect. I must turn off the computer and restart with the Axim in the
cradle for the computer to detect and synch the Axim with the computer.
I have tried the install according to instructions multiple times,
uninstalling inbetween each time. I have upgraded to them most recent WinXP
service pack and MS Office updates. I have downloaded and installed the
most recent version of ActiveSync. None of this seems to help the
installation process.
I did install the software successfully on another laptop PC without a
hitch. The Axim synchs each time it is detected and everything works as it
should. I know that both USB ports work on the Compaq computer as I have
tried other USB devices on each port. I also know that the cradle and USB
cable work right as it works successfully on another laptop. I have also
disabled the power saving options on the USB and turned off all firewalls.
I'm wondering if anyone is aware of problems with Compaq laptops, BIOS or
other system software or hardware issues that may be preventing the install
from completing.
Thanks for reading through this lengthy description. I appreciate your
interest.
