random hard lockups

hi,

i've installed morrowind and both addons, as well as some plugins. i'm
having a problem with random hard lockups. nothing in particular seems
to trigger them. sometimes they happen after 10m, sometimes after an
hour. are lockups still an issue with morrowind on a contemporary PC and
are there any common solutions/workarounds? i don't have lockup problems
with any other software on my machine. i'm using the latest bloodmoon
patch as well.

i also had a problem where i was experiencing weird mouse jerkiness/lag
indoors, and i mostly fixed that by capping my fps below 60. apparently
the video card was moving too fast for the mouse/keyboard polling. and i
wonder if my lockups have anything to do with that kind of problem. ie,
my current PC being too, well, powerful for ye olde morrowind. when
morrowind first came out i didn't experience the lockup problems a lot of
people reported. maybe some crashing, but definitely no hard locks.

any help appreciated. i really want to play through the game again but
these lockups are a real bummer.

The best advice I can give you is to save the game, OFTEN. In the computer
version, just get in the habit of hitting the F5 button every few minutes of
playing time. It won't end your lockup problems, but you won't lose as much
playing time that way.

Try turning off music completely on the slider (NOT sounds, just the
music). That should do the trick.

Lockups can be caused by a lot of things, do you experience problems when
running other games?

If you're using Windows XP it's a good chance it's either a faulty driver
(so get them up to date) or a problem with hardware.

MW crashes randomly for me now. I also have the Bloodmoon and
Tribunal addons installed with only a few mods. It was rock solid
before with just MW installed. I'm not sure whether its a problem
with a conflicting mod (doesn't seem to be) or whether its just the
new Bloodmoon executables are not as stable as the previous ones.

It does seem to be resource related though. The more I play the more
slugglish the game becomes and the longer it takes to transition
between interior and exterior locations.

Maybe we should try defragging, cleaning out our PC cases (Mine's
probably a bit dusty dunno about yours. :) ) and maybe upgrading
drivers Bloodmoon may be more compatible with. i.e. soundcard, video,
etc.

I tracked my hard lock-ups to the screen size, at 1184 it locks up, at
1024 it drops to windows as if I alt tabbed, haven't tried it at
800...
