I'm replacing my cpu in a few days and in the meantime I've been learning about overclocking as I've never done it before. (Good few articles at www.cutompc.co.uk - Master the Dark art of Overclocking, parts I & II; under 'Analysis' then 'Features')

Looking in cpu-z I noticed that the voltage on my 3700+ constantly fluctuates between 1.280v and 1.312v, is this normal or would I perhaps need a better/more stable mainboard or psu before attempting to overclock?

Don't panic, that minute fluctuation in your voltage is gonna cause your PC to reach critical mass! My suggestion, throw it out the window and run!

OK, enough sarcasm. That minute fluctuation in voltage is not a problem. However, if your PSU is not good, it may cause an unstable OC...

the flux is can be caused but the MB and or the power supply.
to be fair its rare to find a 100% stable one and a bit of flux is often caused by Vdroop. (when the CPU goes under load and draws more power that was readly available. it evens out tho.)

dont worry about it. get on the OC bandwagon....
