Owner property of shared file missing when viewed remotely

When viewed from a remote computer in Windows Explorer,
the "Owner" property of some files in a shared directory
is missing. (The Owner property is not displayed by
default in the Detail view of Explorer, so this column
must be enabled manually.)

The owner property is displayed correctly on the local
machine, but some of the files in the shared directory are
missing this property when viewed in Windows Explorer from
a remote computer.

Since the Owner property is not known to the remote
computer, files cannot be transferred between the two
machines. Attempting to copy and paste files to the
remote computer results in the error message:

Cannot copy <filename>.: Access is denied. Source file
may be in use.

This error message is false because it occurs even after a
reboot, before starting any programs that may lock the
files.

The computer on which the shared directory resides is a
laptop running Windows XP Home SP1. The remote computer
is a desktop running Windows 2000 SP4. There is no
mention of this problem in the Microsoft Knowledge Base.

Windows XP Home always has Simple File Sharing enabled.
In this case, "Simple" means "Stupid". See article 304040.
