Wifey has an HP laptop, Athlon 2500+ or so. I purchased 1 Gb of RAM (Crucial Value Select). I put them in , nothing. It boots, runs 2 seconds or so, reboots, repeats 4 or 5 times, then boots up but gives me nothing.

One old stick with one new boots fine.

I haven't played much with verifying both sticks are good, as I had them in and out and all over the place, but that's my first point of attack. Any other suggestions?

Is the RAM the same speed/latency as the old? Sounds like the new is too fast for your computer. It probably works when you have one stick of old in, since RAM speed downgrades to the slowest stick.

Can you set speed/latency in the BIOS?

Does it fail when it gets to Windows or can you boot to the BIOS? This might be a bad stick from the description or maybe even a faulty battery since thats often caused stability issues on my Turion. Try running memtest to at least knock out the memory issue. But yeah, verify that the sticks match in latency, timings and speed and then check for errors.

I've come across cases where a BIOS update cures wierdness like this.

They don't really do BIOS updates for laptops. And this is HP we're talking about..

HP does have BIOS updates for its laptops - would behoove Jef to check to see if his is up to date.

I'm leaning towards timing issues - just like every C2D system had at launch when you tried to use decent RAM.

HP Laptop BIOS update guide.

Yeah, when I was his age - we had to put in ones and zeroes by hand. If you ran out of zeroes, you had to walk, uphill, in the snow for 5 miles to get more. Then you had to roll the zeroes back the 5 miles (uphill again).

Don't even get me started on what happened when you ran out of ones. [/RC]

hence the thumb damage...?

Wow they actually put out a BIOS update. I stand corrected.

Component specs change over time even in the product lifetime of a laptop. They need the flexibility. Power management can also improve with the updates. Consumer may be a bit different but certainly the corporate brands normally do have an update facility.

Might be one to watch out for on Vista laptop issues...

I bought faster RAM, figuring it would downclock to the system speed, so maybe that is the issue.

I'll also check out the BIOS when I get home.

Other than that, no, it doesn't boot at all with the new stuff. The ligths come on, but no display or anything.

Thanks!
