I always go with HP. I used to use Liteon but 2 of them died on me. I've always trusted Plextor but I still consider HP to be the best.

Always use LG drives.

The LG GSAH10N-BAL is fantastic and fast.

I used Pioneer once and it was slow ( was roughly same spec as the LG one).

Never use NEC or other such crap Make of drives. They'll fail very quick.

It's interesting to have read the other replies before posting... for example, I think LiteOn supplies internals for HP. My personal experience with the HP that came in my wife's GX5050 is rather unfavorable, producing DVDs whose readability was almost uniformly suspect. Five or ten years ago their burners were tops but I'm not sure about now. LG and Pioneer make great drives but Plextor usually gets the most raves. YMMV...
