Upgrade from X1600 to 7600GS?

I have an Athlon XP 2500+ mildly OC'ed to 2800+ level. 1.5GB of memory, and a X1600Pro 512 in AGP form factor. My son has a similar system but has a 6800GS. His is faster of course, but my question is what would a 7600GS bring to the party? If I can sell my X1600 for $60 or so is it worth upgrading to a 7600GS? I see several on Newegg for $143. I can already do HDR + AA and have SM3.0. Would I just gain FPS or would there be an increase in visual quality? I can play HL2 on high, and BF2 looks fine, as did Fear. I plan to rebuild to PCI-e next spring wth Vista and DX10 card. Does anyone think it's worth it, or better to wait? I'm assuming my X1600 will handle BF2142, but what about Prey, Crysis or Stalker?

You'd probably be better off waiting a couple of weeks for the X1650pro to come out. It's should be about $100. Cleeve started a thread on the "graphics card" page of this forum that has some benchies of a 7600GS against a X1650pro. You should check it out.

So the $100 X1650 Pro EB reviewed was an AGP card? Oh man, that makes it twice as awesome.

The 7600 GS isn't all that much better than an X1600 PRO.

I wouldn't bother upgrading to anything less than a 7600 GT/X850 XT from an X1600 PRO. Anything less wouldn't be worth the $$, IMHO.

[EDIT] AGP, eh? Sorry, I was thinking PCIe. No 7600 GT's yet (supposedly they're coming though) and X850 XT's are probably overpriced. I wouldn't go less than an X800 GTO or PRO in that case.[/edit]

Wow, that's great, thanks. I'll check it. I passed by that thread cause I figured it wouldn't be AGP. But yes, it would have to be a reasonable performance jump to make it worth the cost.

I was just thinking that if he's seriously considering a 7600GS ( considering the perfromance), he should also take a look at the X1650pro because of the price.

The 7600 GT is on Newegg anyway: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?N=2010380.... I have been contemplating upgrading my 9800 PRO also, should we look into the 7600GT? Would it have comparable performace to the PCIe version?

You should absolutely look at getting the 7600GT. Probably the best AGP bang for the buck.

I couldn't get that link to work, and the only 7600 GTs I can find on newegg are PCI express...

Sorry, had the wrong link the first time. Should work now:

Dude! First one I have seen in stock and the price is better than I thought it would be!!!!! THX for the link.

NV is back in the reasonably priced AGP game.

To me, it looks identicly clocked to the 7600GT PCI-e, so should perform the same and at X850XT levels. There is a $155 AIW X800XT on newegg too, which is a great price if you have use for the TV-tuner and remote. But honestly, the 7600GT is probably a bit faster in most games, offers SM3.0, and only costs $18 more.
