As the subject says, Morrowind keeps dropping to windows as if I'd hit
the alt-tab combination and I can pull it up in the task bar and go
back, with no harm/foul to the game, but it's getting a bit old now...

WinXP, 1gb ram, Geforce 5500, Gamesurround (C-Media 8738 chipset)

Mine does that, too, but it doesn't really bother me, so I haven't
made much effort to stop it. One thing I have noticed is that every
so often I have a little blue box appear and disappear on my toolbar.
I once caught sight of this little blue box disappearing as I came out
of Morrowind to the desktop, so I am assuming that this is what causes
Morrowind to switch to the desktop. I don't know what it is, but
something is running in the background. You might check to see what
is running in the background on your computer and see if you can stop
it.

Every time my virus detector does an auto-update, I find myself
getting dumped back to my XP desktop. I think it may even happen as
well when Netscape sends me a message that I've received a new email
(though I could be wrong). Granted its generally a minor annoyance
(unless my character is engaged in combat) since all I have to do is
select the Morrowind button on my task bar to get back into Morrowind
fairly quickly...

That's my 2¢,

you sure that you haven't pressed that key between right_CTRL and right_ALT

You have a key there? I really can't keep up with all these modern
innovations in keyboard design.

Sometimes when my screensaver, or some kind of auto-update kicks in (the
computer thinks it's idle, when it's really not), my desktop pops up.
However, I can still get back into the game.

That was annoying me, so I finally said screw it and set up a system profile
(I use Windows ME) that disables all that junk (when turning off
autoupdater, screensavers, and whatnot doesn't work....). I just boot into
that profile and play the game.

Most likely some virus checker, antsy spyware program, auto updater
doing it. I get annoyed by AVG and MS Antispyware that way from time to
time.
Unless you are accidentally hitting the Windows or Menu key on the kb?
That used to happen to me a lot after I changed from my old AT keyboard
to a modern Logitech one (and still does from time to time).

nop, I don't, my keyboard is old, but if I had that button I would rip it
apart :) cause hitting it opens windoz start menu and also minimizing any
game you play :-/
