Hi Guyz

Antec SmartPower 2.0 500W vs Thermaltake 550 Watt Power

this is for the asus p5w dh deluxe with ee6600 with a nvidia 7600gt, 4 Sata drives, 2gb ram and the antec p180 case.

1. Which one is better? Meaning which one is more reliable, quieter.

I want to overclock a little @ approx 3.4 Ghz

Personaly i think the antec is better since I'm going for an antec case but is 500w enough if I want to overclock?

Thanks in advance for any replies specially the quick once

Neither.

Get the Antec TRUEPOWERII TPII-480 ATX12V 480W. The TruePower series is higher quality than both of them and it cost basically the same as the Smartpower 500w.

The TruePower II 480w PSU can provide a maximum of 18 amps on each of the two 12v rails. However, only 33 amps is provided on the 12v rails in total, not 36 amps. This is typical of most power supplies, there are a few premium powersupplies that will allow you to simply add the amps together. But only a few and they cost more than you are willing to spend.

Total maximum power on the 12v rails will be 396w. That is more than enough to power your system. In fact, it is an overkill.

- The Conroe E6600 consumes 52w at stock speed. The X6800 consumes 66w at stock speed. I would say that the E6600 @ 3.4GHz consumes about 82w - 86w.

- The 7600GT consumes 36w of power at stock speed. The XFX 7600GT XXX Extreme edition consumes 44w. The core is clocked at 560MHz. The RAM is clocked at 1500MHz, if I remember correctly.

- Assuming you have 4 400GB SATA 7200RPM hard drive, each hard drive will be drawing at most 25w from the 12v rails. 100w in total.

- A DVD drive uses about 14w of power from the 12v rail.

- Toss in 30w "BUFFER" on the 12v rail.

- Basically everything else (RAM, Sound Card, Motherboard, etc) draws power from the 3.3v/5v rails.

All that works out to a maximum of 274w on the 12v rail under the impossibly worst scenario with everything running at 100% all at the same time. That's including the 30w "BUFFER" and is well under the 396w maximum.

It is on the following list for $115.45 ex. gst:

Thank you for your reply.

Just wondering is that power supply not quite old compare to the other two?

is it quite as well?

I do not know how "old" the TruePower series is compared to the SmartPower series. It's simply a slightly different product.

My standards for "quiet" is a bit high. I use a Seasonic S12 PSU which is very quiet. The Antec NeoHE series is also very quiet, but I imagine it is out of your price range.

According to the 20 customer reviews at Newegg.com, there are 10 reviews that specifically states the TruePower 480w PSU is quiet. Not one mentioned it was loud.
