I have 15 Windows system (a mix of Win 2000, Xp workstations) and 4 UNIX systems running SMB. All of these systems are connected to a 10/100 router. All of the system are running Windows file/printer share, and TCP/IP protocols. Often during the course of the day, one or two of the system will not be displayed when browsing the entire network. If I have some of these systems mounted I will find the mounted drive icon with a red X illustrating disconnection. This happens randomly and on all the systems. If I reboot any of these disconnected systems they will reappear on the network.
I was told that “Windows file and printer share protocols has a limit of 10 computers on a network. Is this true? If so how do I share file between these computers without using FTP software.
I was also told that one of these systems takes authority of this protocol and updates each system (basically authenticates all of the shared nodes.) If this is true can I manage this system or dedicate one system to complete this task?
