My computer was running Win2000 Pro. I found my computer
unable to start normally, so I did CHKDSK under command
prompt with no argument, then use system built-in
Defragment tool, amazingly then I found my system totally
fail to boot. I tried to use CHKDSK with parameter Fixup
and R but no use. With Recovery Tool, I found D Volume was
there OK, C Volume was there as well but I couldn't access
directories under C. It said it was an error to list
directories. If I try install Win2000 under D, it will
prompt me to format drive C. How can I do to recover my
system with my critical files under C drive safely
maintained.

That is something you should have been concerned with ***BEFORE*** using
CHKDSK and Defrag. Concentrate now on the reovery of irreplacable and non
backed up data. Use tools that access the former c: disk read-only and that
allow you to copy the data (if possible at all after what you did) somewhere
safe. Once you have recovered the data *verify it*. Once verified reformat
c: and start from scratch.

>Have you tried starting up system with cd? When prompted
for type of recovery select repair. Next select console.
Next select or type fixboot. Or fixboot and then fixmbr.
Type chkdsk. Exit. Hopefully that worked
