I'm doing some research on a new build I'm looking to do and the first and most important piece so far is the case. I want to build a nice large file server that can hold preferably 10-16 drives.

I initially looked at a 4U rackmount system that could hold 16 hot-swappable drives. While this system was nice it was rather high for such a case, roughly $600-750.

Does anyone have any suggestions on a way to obtain a cheap rackmount case or possibly even a standard case just with a lot of 5.25" bays.

The obvious place to look for a cheap rackmount case is on ebay, other than that for a standard case the Coolermaster stacker has 11 5.25" bays and the armor/kandolf also have 11.

Do you need the hot-swappable ability. Unless your running an enterprise file server, that is probably just an excessive cost. I would go with whatever has the most 3.5" drives, because 5.25" drives -> 3.5" adapters cost money also...

Of course, I'm running 6 external HDD's... and I have a desk fan blowing on them all...

Well it isn't neccesary, would just be nice to have. I know it is gonna cost me some dough to build this sucker up, just gotta find a case to start tallying it up.
