We were hit with virus and or trojans yesterday, I ran our
virus scan and fixed the items. But, when I rebooted the
computer I received an error at the beginning stating;
Windows could not start because the following file is
missing or corrupt. <windows 2000 root>\system32
\ntoskrnl.exe. Please re-install a copy of the file.

No for the problem, I can not re-install the file because
I can not get into desktop. I tried to boot off of the CD
and get to the point (blue win 2000 setup screen)
of "starting up windows 2000", but the computer just stays
there, and I can only get out of that screen by turning
off the power. I then tried safe mode, but it only loaded
about 15 entries and stopped. Luckly I cound use the CTL-
ALT-delete to re-start; to beginning.

I tried a emergency repair disk from another win 2k
computer but I received an error that disk was invalid.

It appears that I can not even re-install win 2k because
this file is missing or corrupt.

Please help, anyone know how to get this fixed, get into
safe mode, or at worse case, re-install win 2k.

The error message you describe usually means that the file C:\boot.ini is
incorrect or missing. This MS Knowledge Base article has two options to
solve the problem:
