Any recommendations on some software to monitor/explore private networks? I'm not looking for hacking software. I want see how much network traffic there is, where it's coming from and going to, and have an easy way to identify all IP addresses.

Well, its hard to do if its a peer-to-peer network. If you want to check the data itself use some sniffer tools, there are plenty of good one both for linux/bsd and windows.
If you want to check the network usage... hmm, i dont know. Maybe if your switch supports SNMP then with MRTG or something similar program(of course small office or home(ie SOHO) switches hardly supports it, you have to go with more expensive classes).
