I am looking for a new handheld and am considering going from
my Treo600 to a phone/PPC combination. I like the look, price
and features of the Dell Axim X50V and the Dell site (UK) has
a few good offers at the moment and one of them is a free SIM
to CF adaptor thing by Audiovox.

I'd never heard of this before and although I wouldn't want to
use it as a phone (I understand you can with a cable but not
with the Axim speaker/mic), I would like to use it for my GPRS
connection for email/web and also to send and receive SMS's.

So - does this basically turn the Axim into a mobile when it
is plugged in and "switched on", so that if someone sends me a
text, the Axim will alert me in the same way as a mobile phone
would?

Many thanks - still unsure about leaving the Palm world and
re-entering the PPC world (used to have iPAQ's, a 1940 and a
3650).

Brian,

I don't think the Audiovox card is a mere SIM to CF adaptor, case in which
you would only be able to edit the contents of the SIM. If you are talking
about the RTF8000 (or something similar, but 8000), this is a full phone
circuitry.

Pay attention, you can only talk with this card using the wired headset that
connects to it. It does not transfer voice to/from the Pocket PC speaker and
microphone.

If you are looking for a full Pocket PC Phone like the Treo, the XDAII and
XDAIII from O2 (also known as MDAII and MDAIII from T-Mobile, or iMate and
iMate PDA2K) are surely better options.

It doesn't have the model number, but yes, I think it is the
8000.

I have found some information on it and understand that it wont
work as a phone using the PPC for the mic and earpiece, but that
I'd have to use the wired mic and earpiece. Not a problem as I'd
not want to use it as a phone anyway.

I currently have a Treo600 and am considering going back to the
PPC/mobile phone combination. The Treo600 is a great combined
tool and enables me to take only one device with me. However the
low-res screen on the Treo is getting me down and I can't afford
a Treo650 even if I could buy one in the UK.

I'll be getting a new phone but I wanted to find out if the PPC
would receive SMS messages in the same way that a mobile would,
or if it only received them and/or gave alerts when I was running
a specific SMS application or something.

Regarding SMS messages, the answer is yes. I don't know the quality of the
messaging software that comes with the Audiovox card, but for less than 30
US$ you can buy the SMS Manager or Running Voice GSM, both from
www.pocketpresence.com that do a great job on that.
