I'm planning to use my on board audio's coaxial out to output sound to my 5.1 A/V receiver.

If I do that, is the sound...

a. decoded on board and then sent to my receiver to pass through to the speakers?

Or

b. sent to my receiver to be decoded and played through my speakers?

Also, would it be better to get a card that can to output the audio rather than use the on board audio to output it?

If its analog coax (RCA red/white), then the answer is "a", and the receiver is just amplifying the signal.

If it is digital coaxial (single RCA cable) then the answer is "b" and the receiver's DAC is converting the signal to analog waveforms, and also amplifying the signal.

Depends. If you are talking about onboard digital, vs seperate soundcard digital, then the differences should be rather minor if you turn of Windows KMixer (it automatically resamples all audio on your PC to 48KHz, regardless of input frequency).

If you are talking about analog connections, then a seperate sound card would most likely be superior.
