So, I need a cheap new server that does a bunch of things (to justify the $600 cost). 64 bit-dual core, 1 GB RAM, 100+ GB HD, etc. The machine will need to run on Vista, and will compile code, as well as do a bit of light gaming. Mostly going to use laptop and remote desktop. Willing to go up to $800.

Reliability very important, lookin for a stable mobo, PSU and case.

Any help?

$600 is next to nothing for a server. What you specified is just another computer on your network - you don't game on a server (or need to run Vista, really).

I'd imagine the best solution would be a 3800+ X2 on a socket AM2. Just get a cheapo case (most people hide their servers anyway), and the PSU needn't be more than 450w.

To be honest, you could probably build a 64-bit dual core system with a gig of RAM for under $500, possibly close to $400 (I'm not 100% on US prices).

As far as graphics goes, just get a mobo with an IGP, or alternatively get a 7300/X1300/X300 or something.

X1300XT is good for light gaming. (Whenever it is released...)

IGP would be awesome, shaves a load of pricing.

2GB of RAM, X2 3800+, Seagate PR 250GB, DFI Infinity II AM2 is good..
