Im in the process of looking at a new HS + fan. I want to overclock my AMD 3800+ AM2 socket CPU, but at stock settings on idle the temps are around 50 and under load can hit 60 8O . There have been two HS+fans that I have seen recommended multiple times but im not sure which would be more bang for the buck, either the Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 pro for 30$ or the ThermalTake Big Typhoon for 47$. So does anyone know if it would be worth spending the extra 17 dollars on the ThermalTake? or would it not reduce my temps enough to warrent spending an extra 17$.

(Also I am a noob so any other suggestions on better HSF's would be appreciated, but try to stay below 50$.)

arctic. freezer. pro. 64.

and with the money u save get a couple of zalama fans for the case. maybe 2 x 120mm fans working in a push pull fashion. that should drop ur CPU tem but about 20c hopefully.

I suprised at the temps you are getting with the stock cooler. Though i haven't used the stock cooler on my 3700 but i do know that the cooler i am using isn't too much better then stock. I have the Gigabyte 3D cooler Pro. I get 34 at idle and 42 under load. I know this cooler gave me a 4c drop in temps on my old P4 system.

Yeah my temps are high.... but I dont have Arctic silver on my heatsink just the stuff that came pre applied to it, and I only have 2 80mm case fans(came with the case <_<), but am going to upgrade to 120 mm case fans.

if you do not want to remove the motherboard from the case, go get arctic. freezer. pro. 64. if you want to get better temp, go get typhoon, but you have to remove board out case and install back plate.
it take me less than 5 minutes go install my arctic 64 pro, my load temp never go over 50 c ( new castle 3400+, 89 w)

If taking a walk over to your computer store is not a problem, I would buy some AS5 first and reseat your HSF. I do not konw what is "normal" temperature but as one of the previous posters put up a way lower temp than yours. You are going to need the AS5 no matter what so it is worth a try if you ahve time.
