So, I ordered a new ATI X1900XT video card for my new build. Well, it's been a while since I've had an ATI card. Well, I loaded up ATI Tools, and sure enough, my Core is running at 500 MHz and the memory is at 600 MHz (x2 = 1200MHz) which is lower than advertised. So, at first, I figured, hey, it's because I'm in 2D. Let me load up a game and see if it shoots up. Nada! I played CS:Source and BF2 and the frequencies didn't go up. I mean, I Know I can just over clock it. But I'm just curious as to if anyone else has had this issue. Also, it looks like my Video Card is somewhat bending... possibly due to the heat sink. Should I just go ahead and RMA it???? =/ I already had to RMA my OCZ PSU for almost frying my mobo because it was shooting 12.72V on a 12V rail!!!
Help would be gladly appreciated. Yes, I have Googled and I've gone to Anandtech, HardOCP, ATI's forums, etc. No luck to be quite honest
What you have to do to see if they go up is, run a game and have the ATI control panel up on the overdrive function and you will see for about 2 seconds once u alt tab out of game that it is working how it is suppose to. I mean like it will go back down real quick once u get out of a game, but most likely they are running how they are suppose 2! Its just hard to see it!
The frequencies will only pick up if a 3d app is demanding enough. Some games don't even require the full frequency.
The only way you can see if the frequencies pick up, is by using extended desktop with two monitors, or easier, ATi Tray Tools. Build a custom OSD, and include mem frequency and core frequency into the graph.
BUT, like I said - certain games won't lift the frequency. So it's best to test it with something very demanding aka Fear/3dmark06 etc.
Many people have reported cards that have been bent, and mine looks the same. It's still running though and I can't comment on whether it's a serious issue or just part of life.
ATI was right, when you don't run a 3D app, the Video Card runs at 500/600 MHz. When I game is playing, it jumps up to 625 and 1450 MHz, so it's ok, however, the cooler on the card looks like it somewhat bends the card though :-/ I was thinking about getting the Artic Cooler for it. But my ASUS mobo is already running at 41C and I have the P180B case, with all 3 fans on and an extra fan in the middle of the case blowing on the graphics card and mobo and it doesn't help much. So, I don't know.
