Hello chaps,
Ive got an amd xp clocked @ 2600+ and 512ddr ram (333mhz).
I wish to buy a gfx card _just_ to play hl2 on and my agp gf3 ti200 doesnt quite cut the mustard.
I live in the UK and dont want to spend anymore than £80 (although cheaper is fine!).
Im reserved about asking people in shops as i dont trust their knowledge.
Any ideas welcomed!

More about : card hl2
well i dont know how much things cost over in the UK but take a look at these and see if any are in your price range. you may not be able to max out the Graphics but pretty close.
nVidia Geforce 7600GS
nVidia Geforce 7600GT
ATI Radion x800
ATI Radion X800GTO
all of these are pretty affordable and should be able to handle HL2 just fine. I used to use a 6800GT with my old athlon XP setup (2800+ Barton) and i could almost max out the settings on HL2 but not quite. looked fine though and got plenty of frames. good luck.

gotta agree with the other replies to this thread £80 quid to play HL 2 thats dedication (or a need for medication
lol jus kidding) don't know where bout's in UK but it could be worth checking your nearest PC World you might be able to find a 6600gt\gs or a 9600 pro for around that always worth checking the manager's specials a.k.a end of line stock oh and don't forget to check out Hl 2 episode 1 it requires no more GPU oomph than HL 2, Good luck & happy fragging. 8)

Get another 512 stick of ram, and a 6600GT. It'll play HL2 on Medium-high settings.

nVidia Geforce 6800XT(same as 6800GT but cheaper i believe)This needs to be corrected before the OP bites into it. The 6800XT is not the same as a 6800GT. It has 1/2 the pipes (8 vs. 16), and to boot most 6800XT's are low clocked like a 6800 vanilla, putting them below a 6600GT. The ones with 1000MHz memory clocks are not so bad, but I'd still think there are better bargains out there.
OP: a used 9700 pro or 9800 pro would handle HL2 just fine, but with no FSAA turned on. A 6600GT would be a little better. X800GTO just may be in your price range and is above a 6600GT & 6800XT.

Glad someone said that.

I've got the same specs except 1GB PC2700 (333mhz). Any of the X8XX series would be perfect. I've got an X800XL, and HL2 runs smooth with everthing at max 1600x1200 and Source HDR.

You need another edit
The 6800GS is much faster than the 6800XT. It has 12-pipes and is reference clocked at 350/1000 (like the better 6800XT's out there). Plus the 6800GS is more money, and probably not worth buying as they are near the 7600GT AGP prices. Personally I would take the 6800XT off the recommend list too, and replace it with a 7600GS.Not sure if he can find either in his price range.

I had a X800 Pro before I upgraded to a 7800 GS and it did not support HDR ...it did support bloom and that looked good too....

Source has it's own version of HDR that is DOES support. It doesn't support OpenEXR HDR.
OCUK has an X1600Pro (scroll down) for £67.99.
While not the best card out there, it will easily play HL2 and CS:S. Other than that, go for eBay and see if you can pick up an X800 series or one of the 9800 flavors of cards on the cheap.

I used to have a 6600GT 128MB and 1024MB DDR400 of RAM with Intel 530@3.0GHZ ...I played HL2 & HL2E1 ..with max settings with 4XAA , 8X AF . FPS were always aorund 35-45 even with HDR .
and there is nothing wrong to search for a special card for HL2 .. HL2 source engine became so popular that many other games will be using it in the future ..no to mention that we have already CS:S and Day Of defeat :Source ..
there is also another game called Sin Episodes ..and another RPG game ..but I don't remember it's name .
but to get ready for future adjustments in that engine (particualrly for Ep2 and Ep3 ) it's better to get a 6800 or 6800GT . may be consider an X800XT or X800GTO .
