Help with flashing error light on HP 1500L printer, please

I've got a 1500L that has a flashing error code; It's the "B/W
cartridge" light and the manual doesn't tell you much and suggests
that a new cartdidge might fix the problem. (THis is not a toner-out error)

Running the HP troubleshooter hangs foreverer and suggests that it can't talk
to the printer.

Th is an XP system and there are no errors in the event view and
device manager says the USB interfaces are working.

Any suggestions ?
