decision time (help)

Hi all. Im building a new comp, and its going to be pretty high end. And I cant decide what to do with the harddrive setup. I am stuck between getting a 74 gb Raptor and taking out the 160 gb ata 100 :? barricuda i have now for storage. Or should I get another of the same drive I have now and raid 0 8O the drives. which would be faster? I hear raptor is nice and fast :twisted: so I dont know if two ata 100 drives would keep up. and dont ask me to do a diff set up because I want to go as cheap as posible but get good performance. so bottom line, im getting 1 drive, which should it be? :?:

oh yeah and if i go raid set up, im not getting a raid card. to expesive. so it would tax the cpu. if it matters, cause i plan on getting a 6600

when you say you're trying to go the cheaper route, Are you talking about getting another one of either of those drives? I personally love my to Raptors speed, but i got them on a really sweet deal (both for $150), so it made it reasonable price to get them. If you have to pay full price then the price/performance ratio kinda goes out the door. You could always get 2 of these drives http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822145082 and do RAID 0 on these. they run really close to the Raptor specs when in RAID and both of them only would set you back $90.

what I mean by cheaper route is that Im not going to buy more then one drive, its either a raptor off ebay, or another ata 100 barricuda for a raid 0. I just want to know which would be faster, the raptor or the raid 0.

In your case, the speed of the Raptor with edge out your raid 0. But no all around.

The raptor wouldn't beat the RAID 0 drives all around.

it all depends on what you're doing with your system.

You can get 2 SATA's *and* a PCI controller for less than the retail price of one Raptor.

I plan on gaming... and student use. Im thinking of going into game design, so i would use it for that. and to misry, i can get the raptor and get another for raid in the future.

I change my mind, i found a 250gb western digital drive for 45 bucks, i will buy that and another one for raid.
