I just built my first computer. (I've owned computers for years, but this is the first one I've built.0

I've got an ASUS P5W DH motherboard with an Intel E6600, 2 gigabytes of PC6400 RAM, a Seagate 300 GB SATA2 hard drive and a BFG 7900GTX video card.

I've overclocked the CPU from 2.4 to 2.7 ghz and the memory from PC6400 up to PC7100.

Out of curiosity I downloaded 3DMark06, (the free version), and ran it on the computer.

It came up with a 3DMark06 score of 6407. Somehow I thought it might do better than that.

Is there something obviously wrong, or is that score in line for the computer I've built?

Nothing is wrong. Every year, 3Dmark gets more demanding. Your score is quite good actually. If you want a comparison, try running 3DMark05. You'll probably score around 11,000 there.

That's a pretty good score. Run 3DM05; if you score 10k+, then your rig is fine.

i think your score is good but you can use the free version and compare your score to scores of systems like yours.i cant remember exact way right now but you can set it up to compare setups like what you have and see range of scores

My best so far was a 5422, so yes you're doing fine. Specs are below, and my CPU was @ 2750MHz. Of course, I wasn't using a GTX... maybe a volt mod is in order.

In my opinion that does seem to be a tad low... My specs are in my siggy here and I score over 7000 on my system with no overclocking and a fully loaded pooched install of Winblows(I thought of benchmarking a little late). I'm sure that on a clean install of Winblows I would score between 7300 and 7500. I woulda thought that your system would atleast be higher then mine given the cpu and graphics setup... this show the power of AMD and SLI... or just a fluke?

Hi Guys,

I ran PCMark and 3DMark on my PC last night. I was using the free version. As I am not using the pay service (just not worth it for one run at $40 if you dont use it professionally), I cannot check to see how my system stacks up against others. I hit Google and the forumz, and got some data points. If those points prove true, then I think I am going to be very disappointed with the new system. Could you please take a look at my scores and let me know what you think? Please post yours too so others coming to this page can learn too. THANKS!

PCMark = 6493
3DMark = 4936

I don't know but I do think that score is a little low. I have the E6600 (stock), 7950 GX2, 2 Gigs of Corsair 5400 RAM, and I ran 3d mark06 (free version) and got a score of 8219.

What surprised me were the CPU tests. The two tests that ran never got above 1 FPS. What's up with that?

I also think it's pretty low. What diagnostics can I run. How do I start to fix this problem?
September 7, 2006 2:42:53 PM

I would not worry too much as 3dmark06 is very hardware intensive.Try running 05 version and see where it leaves you.

i think that you can go to website after your run of 3d mark and save your project (free but i think you register or something) then when you do that you can save a few scores there and compare to others and you set parameters to compare cpu, graphics card ,etc
September 7, 2006 3:49:10 PM

Those sound right to me, at least they are about what i am getting:

<b>3dMark06: 6103</b> @3.0GHZ
<b>3dMark05: 11537</b> @2.4Ghz
September 7, 2006 3:59:00 PM

Hi wstcoaster07. You've got the exact same rig! Great, now I have someone to compare my benchies with. I'm going to try the overdrive funtion on the card tonight (someone earlier recommended that), and then may even look into OCing the CPU. Was it difficult to get it to 3 Ghz?
September 7, 2006 4:41:15 PM

<me> dreams of those scores </me>
September 7, 2006 6:49:12 PM

about as difficult as opening a door. Just read Wusy's guide.

I just followed his steps and increased the FSB to 333 to get 3Ghz (along with disabling the things he said). My problem is that my memory will not run at the rated timings and speed so I am running crappy timings (RMAing it in the next few days). I would like to run it at 400MHz but its best to do a 1:1 (so 667 cause i dont want the FSB at 400 with a 9X multiplier) like he mentions in the guide. Until the P5W DH can change the multiplier we are stuck at 9X for now.

What are you overclocking your vid card with and to what speeds?

Your score is not low matey, here is what I got with one of my setups.

You're running two 7900GTs, and he's only using 1 7900GTX.
September 9, 2006 9:39:12 PM

I just got through overclocking my CPU and GPU and here is what I came up with.

3Dmark06 score: 6859
SM2.0 score: 2541
HDR/SM3.0 score: 2889
CPU score: 2917

E6600 OCed to 3.4 GHz
x1900xtx OCed to 680/800
2 GB XMS2 PC 5700 4-4-4-12
ASUS P5W DH
Zalman 9500

It looks like your score is good considering I OCed my CPU more and also my GPU.

He said he has two 7900GTs; how is that so hard to believe? I score just over 7300 with two 7800GTs!
September 9, 2006 11:23:27 PM

my bad i thought he said single 7900gt
September 11, 2006 12:49:55 PM

Yes its 2 7900GT's on my system but he is running a 7900GTX. Most of the in-game benchmarks I have seen show only a slight improvement in performace for the SLI. Perhaps 3Dmark06 is different but I would think that the difference between the 2 7900GT's and 7900GTX would be maybe 5-10%. Once I fix my system ill go with a fresh install of XP and benchmark with 1 7900GT and with the 2 and check to see exactly how much of a performance boost I get from having the 2nd 7900GT.

i'm scoring over 9000 with everything stock

my rig:
e6600

bfg 7900gt oc
2g OCZ ddr2 800
2x230g HDD set for stripping

damn, how is that even possible with everyone else in the mid 6k's

September 12, 2006 1:27:50 AM

Yea, can you post your link to your scores on the futuremark website.
September 12, 2006 2:19:34 AM

comrade's score doesn't seem to bad but fishboi's score does seem kind of low considering that he has an X1900XT in there. Here's what I got with this system (everything stock):

Cooler Master Centurion 5 Mid-Tower
Antec SmartPower 2.0 SP-500 500W
MSI 975X Platinum PowerUp Edition
Conroe E6600 @ 2.4GHz
Corsair XMS2 DDR2-800 5-5-5-12 (but running at DDR-667 at time of test thanks to old BIOS revision)
eVGA 7900GT KO 512MB GDDR3 (560/1500)
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3320620AS 320GB (same as fishboi's)
..and floppy/optical drives, mice, keyboard, etc.

3dMark06: ~5450 (forgot exact score)

It was the free version, so the resolution was fixed at 1280x1024...some of you guys are doing it at 1024x768 but I think the free version forces you to stay at 1280x1024. Also, can you guys post the GPU/memory clock speeds on your video cards when you post your scores?

EDIT: Looks like a lot of people are sporting E6600's...must be because they've figured out that it's too expensive to pay for the E6700/E6800X versus getting the least expensive Core 2 Duo with 4MB of cache and overclock it later. Good thinking! 8)

EDIT #2: Okay, I lowered the RAM timings to 4-4-4-12 and overclocked the video card to 600MHz/1600MHz. The score is now 5,799 3DMarks.
September 12, 2006 2:40:18 PM

My thought is the striping gives the 9000 score. Thats the only thing there that sets it apart from the other systems. I don't pretend to understand why striping would give such a huge performance jump... thats over a 25% boost in performance... something is fishy there. I'd like to see the link to the benchmark on the futuremark site.
September 12, 2006 3:24:32 PM

Hey benzebut,

I'm really suspicious about that score. It hardly seems possible. Are your specs accurate?? If so, I truly want details on how you got that baby to run at that score. Your gameply must be awesome.

Please let me know ASAP.
September 12, 2006 3:25:32 PM

Good idea. Can you post the link? Could it be in his settings?
September 13, 2006 7:35:19 AM

I get like a 6588 score on my system.

E6400 oc'd to 3.48 ghz
2 gigs corsair ram 4-4-4-12, 435 mhz,
ATI X1900XT oc'd to 655/792 with ATI overdrive
74 raptor/400gig hard drives.

Without all the overclocks I think score drops down to like 5800 if I can remember correctly. There's a very noticible difference in Oblivion gameplay when system is overclocked.
September 13, 2006 8:35:44 AM

I get ~8300 consistently with the free version of 3dmark06. Here is my system:

6600 OC to 2.7Ghz.
Asus P5WDH
2gig Corsair 6400CL5
Geforce 7950GX2

Everything is at stock apart from the processor which I overclocked by 300MHz by upping the FSB a little. I pretty sure I could easily get 9k+ by overclocking the graphics card and taking the cpu to over 3Ghz. But I dont want to overclock my system that far as it is fast enough atm.
September 13, 2006 10:45:06 AM

With you guys' current hardware, >5k in 3dmark 2006 is possible, but how about this?175x in 3dmark2005   .I'm still saving some money to buy C2D or even C2Q based pc, but i dunno when i'll save enough money
