If you're wanting to take advantage of gigabit ethernet with your NAS, you'll need a 1.5+Gbps SATA RAID config, or maybe SAS. You'll also need a 4x PCI-E RAID card to fully take advantage of the speed, PCI just won't cut it.

Your gigabit ethernet card will also have to either be built onto the motherboard via PCI-E or attached via PCI-E.

Thanks for the response, I am trying to build something like the Cheap NAS RID 5 box that is on smallbuilder. using IDE drives and a cheaper RAID card. Found the card at wierdstuff for $80 including 4 cables. And the rest will be my old box. I like to jot down the builds so fiends can see them and comment. easier than Newegg lists.

Gonna need to format that HD and reinstall from scratch with the new mobo.

Onboard graphics? Just for surfing, email, school projects......? Else might wanna consider something like a cheap Nvidia 5500 or something simple (PCI) ?

Win98? Arggghhhh........she's young, get her to move into the modern era ;)

Either reduce the RAM on Box 6, or install XP. 98 (any version) is notorious for having mysterious bugs with more than 512MB. Mysterious, annoying, and impossible to fix.

Actually, leave it with 2GB/98SE for a while until the user gets absolutely sick of the crashing, then use the newer OS to fix the problems.

Or just cut the RAM back to 512 and leave it at that.

Really? Never heard that, might be part of the problems she has.
I will look at she what is in the box when I open it. 98 gives crap for info on the system screen, had to search just to find out it was a Pent 4, family 15 step 2 or some stuff drivvel
