Delay

I have two puters. Both with win7 and WinXP. I play an SY99 synth using the computer audio and speaker levels. The sound out is via headphone line to line-in on computer. I get no delay with winXP when I "hit a note" the sound is delivered instantly. With win7 there is an annoying delay. Both are on-board sound. I think win7 is the problem... as every new Windows OS is. There seems no logical reason to alter the successful winXP audio setup. They should have tweaked it better with all sorts of options in place. Microsoft doesn't seem to like giving options. Are there any muso types who can please help?
