Hi, I have inherited the Myst Trilogy from my late father. I do not play
games but could'nt resist having a go, I installed Myst and realy
enjoyed it so was eager to play the next two.

Riven will not load quicktime, I have tried deleting Myst, deleting
quicktime and downloading quicktime (6.5.1) independantly of the game. I
still get stuck at the same point.

Exile installs but I sonn get an error message "cannot find JPEG Face ID
105.1" I have not got further than the study.

My computor uses windows XP could this be the problem? Do I need to find
an earlier quicktime? I expected the version in Myst or Riven to be
sufficient. Is there a patch for my Riven problem or do I need to use an
earlier version of Windows

Thanks in advance

XP might be the problem for Riven, but I doubt it. Exile almost
certainly not (unless it's a particular conflict with something else you
have installed.) Traditionally the Quicktime problem is solved by
installing the version on the CD. Note the several versions of QT can
peacefully coexist on the same computer, so don't be shy about that.
For the Exile issue, try searching for patches online. I'm not sure
what else the problem might be.

I've ran all Myst games (except realMyst or the original non-masterpiece
edition of Myst) on Windows XP without problems. I suspect QuickTime is at
fault. Try the version that comes with the game. I don't remember offhand
which version Riven uses, but versions 3+ and earlier ones are not
compatible at all. If Riven wants QuickTime 2.x you'll have to give it 2.x.

Alternatively you could purchase the 10th Anniversary DVD, which has the
games modified to run optimally under Windows XP, even to the point that
they don't actually work on other Windows versions anymore. Always seemed a
rather senseless thing to do to me, given that as said I've never had any
problems with any of the games under XP in the first place.

Unfortunately it is the quicktime on the disc that will not load!

I will look for a patch for my Exile problem, I wonder if in trying to
solve the Riven trouble I did something to the Exile installation? I
will uninstall Exile, turn it all off and start again from scratch.

Thanks for your advice,

Hmm, strange... I just installed Riven, just to check, and it went without a
hitch. When the time came during the installation of Riven to install
QuickTime, I indicated I wanted the advanced installation, and chose to skip
checking for older versions (mainly because that takes so long). It
installed without problems. Riven also runs without problems, video displays
fine.

Perhaps you have a different version of Riven and/or Quicktime on your CD?
Could you check the readme.txt file on the first CD, the first line gives
the version of Riven. Mine is version 1.02.

Also check the version of the D:\QTWSETUP\WIN32\CUSTOM\QT32INST.EXE file
(right click the file, select properties, check the version tab). What is
the value given for file version? Mine is 2.1.2.59.
You could also try running that file manually, see if that works.

You say QuickTime does not load. I assume you mean it does not install. Are
there any error messages given? Any other symptoms you can think of that
might help us diagnose the problem?

Installing quicktime manually has done the trick done the trick, hurray
and thank you!

I have had a spell rushing about like a headless chicken - I did not
wait to find out how to access the menu bar - and will now start again
settle down to a long night.......

As for this problem, you might try to download and install the v1.22 patch
for Exile:
