My HP 4M is printing erratically, and it I suspect the power supply is
failing. The cost to repair or replace that alone is more than buying
a "new" used laser in the HP4/5 series, so I've looked at local sales.

My needs are for reliable printing of 100-200 page jobs a few times a
week. 600 dpi is fine (actually, 300 dpi is good enough).
I'm very attached to PostScript.

I could get an LJ4, and transfer the SIMMs and network card to make it
a 4M.

However, one niggle with my HP4M is that it doesn't have power saving
features, and that may have led to its demise. The 4+ and 5 do, as
well as being a little faster. They also use the same EX carts (which
I can get cheap).

I'd have to get new PS SIMMs for these as the PS SIMMs are
model-specific, mostly these look like $20 on Ebay so that's not a
breaker.

One possibility is the HP5MP, (P=personal, M= Mac=PostScript), about
half the weight of a 4 or 5, which in itself is attractive, different
toner cart and a little slower (6 ppm vs 8-12 for the HP4 and 5)
though.

Any comments on the 5MP as to reliability, susceptibility to jams
especially?

Is the HP5 noticeably better than the HP4?
