Couldn't you jut get the XDA unlocked and put your Orange sim in it?

Indeed I could, but if I'm getting an XDA cheap with an O2 contract, I want
to see out the 12 month contract first....

I didn't mean you to ditch the O2 contract. What I meant was just use the
Orange sim when you were at home with the poor O2 signal. Or better still
get a twin sim holder for the XDA and put both sims in it and that way you
won't have to mess about swapping the sims.

Si, XDA-Developers have the applet you need to remove the SIM lock on your
handset. You can then run the Orange SIM in it. You would need to create
another GPRS connection entry for the Orange ervice though.

He could always use the car antenna connector in the rear to boost the
signal ......
