Archived from groups: microsoft.public.win2000.file_system (More info?)

Win 2000 somehow stopped making files in folders visible. I can see folders
as trees and each folder property shows the number of files in each folder,
but I can not see files (MSWord files, etc). I have to go to each
program and open a file from File>Open.

IE 6.0 also stopped functioning at the same time (it doesn't load anything)
and I can not reinstall/uninstall IE. I downloaded IE 6 pack Set up
always fails. Outlook Express shows "msimn.exe generated errors..." whenever
I tried to read messages (I can receive mails).

Virus weren't found. Firewall was disabled. Folder options were fixed to
default setting. But none of these fix problems.

I deleted some of the suspicious programs from PROGRAM folders because a
free pop-up blocker seemed to generate more pop-ups and it downloaded other
programs onto PC. All problems described above started after I tried to get
rid of unknown programs.

Let me know what file I should restore to make files visible. I also want to
make IE 6.0 and Outlook work.

Sounds like something's wrong. You should run a full batch of scans.

Ad-aware
Spybot search and destroy
Hijack This ( be very carefull with this one, you can really mess up your system by accident, get a tutorial on what to remove and what to leave)

Also, i recomend using AVG free edition. Nice little free virus utility that has a good shield that doens't use nearly the system resources as many commercial products (wont slow your system down to have it running i mean)

Let us know what you find.

That system has been totally invaded by a virus. I guess any anti-virus from now will not work on it. The best way to scan for a virus is to go to the Symantec On-line scanner.
