I have a HP Officejet 5110 which is only allowing users with administrative
access print. If a regular user tries to print nothing happens. I alos have
an old laserjet 4si installed that anyone can print to. Can anyone give me
any ideas to try.

This is on an XP SP2 machine.

Go to www.hp.com and click on the "software & drivers" link.
Enter the data to find your printer and update your drivers.
Also, see HPs FAQ to find your solution.

Yes, I do like that, made it up myself. You'll notice that
all laws now have a clause that says, "if any part of this
law is found to be unconstitutional, other parts will remain
in effect" or similar. The attitude is "we want to do it
and have a question about whether it is legal so we'll do it
and let the courts sort it out." Trouble is the courts only
look at some laws and a lot of damage is done before any
appeals are heard.

Feel free to use it as often as you want, I have released
the copyright to public use.

You might find that using the device manager to remove all
traces of the HP machine, even going so far as to remove the
USB ports and rebooting with the machine disconnected. The
installing the software and connecting the printer/scanner
only when prompted may fix the problem

I did not use device manager. I did remove registry entries,
but not USB ports.
Kinda scared to do that.
Would that be USBNULL HP008?
Would you suggest using ADD HARDWARE to install and let it
ask for CD? You know that NEW HARDWARE FOUND ballon
pops up as I am installing? Also, do you think that this is
and SP2 related issue? My printer is HP officejet 6110
all-in-one. Less than 2 Years old.
Thanks for your help and for the QUOTE of the year!

JIM I want to add that a registry issue program alerted me.
It said "entries related to HPIS DIGITAL IMAGING were invalid".
So I thought I could reinstall to rid of this. I had just formatted
and reloaded SP2 because of MANY problems. Also. one program
that I am fairly sure that added to my first SP2 download fiasco
was Spyblaster which I am hesitant to reininstall. Are you and
attorney?

Removing the ports is not "dangerous" they will be
redetected and reinstalled on rebooting. You then will be
able to reinstall your hardware.
You should have a uninstall in the HP folder for the device,
too.

Two years is "old" in computer years. Be sure to download
the latest drivers to a folder and rather than installing
from the CD, use that folder.

The registry is like an index in a book, except that when it
runs and doesn't find an entry it returns an error. Most
likely the required HP software and drivers are not
installed in the expected folders. This is one of the
reasons for needing XP compatible software.

I do have a number of friends who are attorneys. They all
love "lawyer jokes."
How many lawyers does it take to grease a combine? Just
one, but if he's small you may need to run two through.

A lawyer died in a train wreck and arrived in heaven. There
was a large assembly that greeted him at the Pearly Gates.
All the Saints, Prophets and even the Lord was there. After
parade the check-in was resumed. The lawyer was shown to
his new domicile, it was a palace with hundreds of rooms,
servants and all the modern conveniences.
He asked the Lord if everybody had such accommodations in
Heaven? He was told no, most live in just a single room and
some share their rooms with others, but you're our first
lawyer.

I am on SS disablity. High school grad. Started my computer carrer at 17
"KEYPUNCHING:. Then computer operator, then to programming which I hated!
Did not get personal PC till 2000. Had my daughters GATEWAY WIN 98SE
She had it so screwed up. I added memory, new hard drive, modem, cdrw and
finally upgraded her to XP. I got new GATEWAY in 2002 and had absoluty NO
problems till I upgraded to SP2. My problems are mainly with Symantec and HP.
I formatted and reinstall SP2 with CD courtesy of Microsoft! I am still
having
problems with Symantec 2005 Goback and my printer. I love this site. It is
very informative and some them posts are absolutely ridculous, but humerous!

Often those security suites are too protective and too hard
to disable. Checkout Symantec's web site for FAQs.

Thanks again Jim for your suggestions. I WILL be appliyng them
soon. I even purchased 2005 Symantec products, hoping they would
with better with SP2. In my opinon they should have gave a
FREE upgrade to address compatablity issues with Microsoft.
Products seem to be working O.K. Problem was with a Liveupdate
given for Goback. Boy did that screw my computer up.
Oh, well gives my something to do besides playing Spider Solitaire.
Look like the lawyer joke I told was not wasted. Heh And again I enjoyed
your jokes. Especially the one about Heaven.
