Im going to get some new pieces to build a fresh machine:

Proc-- Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 Socket 775 2.13GHz

mobo-- Asustek S775 Intel P965 ATX Audio Lan;
or-- Asustek S775 Intel 915PL ATX Audio Lan

drive---Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320GB S300

Ram--- 1 gig of ddr2 ram, (pls suggest one)

graphics-- either 7900gt, or a 7950gx2

i currently have a Thermaltake purepower 450w psu,
Audigy 2 soundcard

A couple of questions:

1: is it possible to have 1 SATA hard drive, and 1 ide drive in the same computer?

2: If i have a single stick of 1024mb ddr2 ram, will it work in ddr mode?

Is this a good setup?

Suggested Changes:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6300

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3

RAM: OCZ Gold 1GB (2 x 512MB) DDR2-800

Video: eVGA Geforce 7600GT <--- With DX10 so close, there's no point in blowing $300 or more on a video card you'll be using for 3-4 months.

Power Supply: After checking the specs on your power supply, the 12V rails are not going to be able to provide enough power to the system, specificly the video card. The 12V rails on that supply only provide 15A, and with a 7900GT or even a 7600GT, you want a MINIMUM of 17A (for the 7600) or 18A (for the 7900). 19A would be better. Therfore I'm going to suggest the Antec Truepower 550W

To your questions:

1. Yes, it is possible to have both SATA and PATA drives running concurrently in the same computer.

2. I'm not exactly sure what you mean by this, since DDR and DDR2 are completely different RAM standards. I'm going to take a stab at this and assume that by "ddr mode" you mean dual channel mode. If that is what you meant to say, then the answer is no. You MUST have at least 2 sticks of ram in the computer to run dual channel. Depending on the chipset, those sticks may or may not have to be the same size, but I would aim for making them the same size for the sake of stability.
