Unless you already have an AM2 Rig (and even then it's probably worth selling the MB/CPU if you're upgrading anyway), the best way to go is the 6300. Faster than many (most?) AMD Processors at stock and faster than almost all when OCed.

As always, I reserve the right to change my mind 6-9 months from now

LOL, AMDFANBOYS are alive
I hope you aren't calling me a fanboy. :( I'm actually an Intel fanboy at heart.

A true Intel Fanboy would never run an AMD Rig. You look like one of those God forsaken agnostics to me and no matter what you do. No matter what you say. God's gonna get you for that. 8)

AMD Athlon X2 AM2 3800+ or INTEL Core 2 Duo E6300 1.86GHz

Not sure what you want it for. If you are asking on a purely performance level then yes an e6300. If its price performance then i'd say x2 3800 at stock and overclcocked its close but probably the 6300, although their both good overclockers. I'm getting the 3800 because to me in Canada its a great price. I'm getting it for a 170 bucks or maybe less with a membership to the site. I think the 6300 is like 260 so too me its not worth it. I'm also getting it because my plan is to buy an AM3 processor in about a year and a half or more along with another vid card then and that should be great till K10.

So basically if you don't change your whole comp when upgrading and are just looking at performance then the intel is great. If you want a long upgrade path and great bang for buck at stock then amd. Also if you are gaming at high res like 1600x1200 the cpu has less impact so then i would go with whats cheaper. Again another reason i'm going x2.

Core 2 Duo E6300 = AMD Athlon64 X2 4600+ (Performance wise)

Let's give the E6300 an avg modest overclock to about 2800MHz. This means it would take an AMD Athlon64 X2 a clockrate of about 3200MHz to be somewhat competitive. I just don't see many AMD Athlon64 X2 3800+'s reaching 3200MHz.

My 2 cents.
